Stereolab – Not Music (Duophonic UHF)

Stereolab – Not Music (Duophonic UHF)

Basically a collection of recordings from the studio sessions that spawned their 2008 release (Chemical Chords) but not exactly sounding like cast offs of that final cut. Sounding better altogether to be honest, we haven’t got sick of it yet even with Albert constantly playing it. That’s a result if there ever was one as he’s been known to turn people off music with the flick of a play button (we jest). Some darker synth led sounds, although still relying on a few of their upbeat bossa style tracks, it’s a well rounded release and keeps us going through their self imposed hiatus.

Recent arrival and getting a lot of air (shop) time. Excellent introduction to the bossa nova movement while also including a few rarities for the bossa devotees. The CD release comes with extensive 70 page sleeve notes, or should we say book, with some features on all the important players of the time and some beautiful photography from the era. The vinyl release gets spread across two volumes with little to choose from either realistically. The sleeve notes however get transformed into a hardback 200 page book which is pretty attractive document. Could this release be more complicated? Either way it made us unseasonably chirpy on Thursday morning.

As far as a nautically themed hip hop album goes I think this may be top of the Pile. That isn’t meant to put you off by the way, one of the most original and best Irish albums of last year is still getting played a lot in the shop. Exile eye and Deep Burial playing out an ode to metal, the ocean and Irish tradition, a combination that could easily have ended up an aural mess in other hands has resulted in something special in theirs. Our Irish album of the year. Stick it on when we’ve gotten too upbeat with the bossa sounds!
