Cubs – The Whispering Woods – Rusted Rail

Cubs – The Whispering Woods – Rusted Rail

We might just build a whole section in the shop built around this album, free-folk anyone? Incredibly natural and earthy sounding album that spans full-blooded vocals to rusty sounding instrumentals. Comprised of 11 musicians bringing members of Phantom Dog Beneath The Moon, United Bible Studies, C Joynes, Plinth, Agitated Radio Pilot, and Yawning Chasm amongst others, it’s a beautiful piece of work and that’s just the handcrafted sleeve. If we were to make some minor comparisons you might here us mention John Fahey, Peter Broderick but comparisons wouldn’t really do it justice; we’d rather you just listened.

Meljoann – Squick – Boy Scout Audio

Is this what Skwee actually sounds like? The very niche sound of Scandinavian electro gets put through the squeezer (sorry) and the result is ‘Squick’, a superb debut from Dublin native Meljoann. Its better described by a combination of the aforementioned skwee, electro, funk and as she puts it herself, ‘wonky r’n’b’. If you don’t believe us you can stream the entire thing and make your own mind up over at her labels website, here.

Sic Alps – Napa Asylum – Drag City

Sic Alps – Napa Asylum – Drag City

Superb new effort from San Francisco based Sic Alps, managing to squeeze in 22 songs in 48 minutes. Apply the term ‘pop’ loosely to this collection of fuzzed out noisey but still understated compositions. Sic alps best album to date and certainly the most coherent.

All the above available on both CD and Vinyl formats in Plugd Records, Caroline Street (Soon to be Tobin Street…!)
