Grant Hart
When people like Black Francis point a finger and say these guys made me pick up a guitar, you know it must have been something special. The Pixies frontman was referring to Husker Du, a band who kept the US alt-rock light lit during the 80s, and man, there were some dark days . . .
Anyhoo, the two main logger-headed protagonists of Husker Du, Bob Mould and Grant Hart, kept that ship afloat for a handful of fantastic albums, before imploding and going their very separate and painful ways.
As in all great musical combos, both brought different cards to the table. Mould’s edginess was complimented by Hart’s melody. Both wordsmiths, perhaps the competition for songwriting titles proved beyond compromise as time went by . . . perhaps, perhaps, perhaps . . .
Husker Du left an indelible mark, as bands like Pixies have since acknowledged, and Hart and Mould have since cultivated this reputation through solo work and written word.
