ZAUM is a fortnightly event held on Mondays in the Quad on Tuckey St, Cork. Started in September 2009 by Rory O’ Brien (guitarist in Ten Past Seven), its goal is to encourage musicians, performers and artists to use the night as a forum for getting their work in front of an audience.

Since its inception, there has been a wide and diverse array of acts that have taken part, from singer-songwriters and noise artists to comedians, folk groups, Sacred Harp singers and trad bands.  Special one-off nights have also featured, including a spoken word night and a showcase of local filmmakers.  The night has also spawned its own ZAUMzine featuring artwork, photographs, short stories and recipes from local talent.

Trumpets of Jericho

Many of the participants so far have featured in well-known local bands but have chosen ZAUM as a means of performing with side-projects or exploring their own individual tastes.  Members of Rest (Hooker No. 1, Vomit Nest), Ten Past Seven (Tarseer), Jezery (Jimmy Lyons), People of the Monolith (Spekulativ Fiktion), Slow Motion Heroes (Diarmuid Galvin) and more have featured.

Local electronic heroes such as Toby Kaar, Commandot and Skirmish have performed, as have noise-artists like First Blood Part II, Narwhals and Zwukovski.  ZAUM has also featured full bands, with the likes of Noland Folk, Leaflog, Trumpets of Jericho and Bona Fide Federation contributing to the night’s diversity and concept of ‘anything goes’.

Leaflog

ZAUM is neither a showcase nor an open mic session; it is a mixture of both. It provides the opportunity for acts to play their first shows in an intimate setting and to an attentive audience without the pressures of a full-on proper gig, while some of the performers choose to experiment rather than show off anything that is finished.
The acts on the night are organised in advance to keep everything relaxed and to guarantee diversity and quality for the audience.

If you’ve got an idea for the night, know someone who would be into doing something and/or would like to perform yourself, please contact the organisers at zaumday@gmail.com or www.myspace.com/zaumcork.
