No sooner had we finished asking Popical Island a few questions for our Imprint section, but an e-mail arrived informing of their new Christmas album and festive knees-up at Crawdaddy, next Saturday, December 17th.
The album comes with the superbly catchy title of Ding Dongs Merrily Get High and features several acts from the Popical fold, aswell as two supergroup efforts courtesy of The Popical Island Showband, and will be exclusively available for free at the gig on the night (on a first-come first-served basis, 5 yoyos on the gate, from 8pm). Entertainment on the night is provided by Land Lovers, Grand Pocket Orchestra and Hello Moon.
I’m still weighing up my own favourite from among the various sparky lo-fi teenage symphonies. At the moment, it’s between the lovely fuzzy Sparklehorse vibe of Grand Pocket Orchestra’s If you’re tired, the tremendous Wall of Sound in a shed of the Showband’s Blotto and the sumptuous guitar echo of Pantone247′s Get off with a stranger (at Christmas). You’ll also find the considerable talents of Squarehead, Yeh Deadlies, The Walpurgis Family, Tieranniesaur and Jonny Fun & the Hesitations on there, but you’ll have to get to the gig (early) to pick up your own copy of this tasty pop platter. (Although you can savour the sounds on the cloud below…)
