Perry Benthos, the head honcho of Benthos Records, has a few thoughts to share with us on tonight’s gathering at The Pavilion in Cork, which includes his charges, Trumpets of Jericho
Dearest Chumplings,
It has come to my attention that one of our acts (Trumpets of Jericho, I believe), is participating in some sort of fundraiser for the local ‘seashell’ foundation tomorrow night in the Pavilion.
Now if someone were to say that this is an attempt at green washing by Benthos Records in lieu of an as yet unpublished investigation by the irrelevant (and increasingly meddlesome) OG Magazine into our company practices, then that man (or perhaps woman – this is the 21st century after all) would be a very cynical man person indeed.
Things could not be farther from the truth. In fact, I have long been a fan of the insightful writings of the eminent blogger Anthony Allwrong, one of this country’s few remaining bulwarks against the macabre madness of the PC fire brigade. Allwrong makes some very interesting and impartial points in his latest blog entry, such as the following helpful comparison:
Let’s say these gas fields are a bad case of acne off the side of our country’s otherwise unblemished teenage face. The likes of Royal Dutch Shell plc then, is our kindly old multi-national chemist; with its refinery represented by a brand-new tube of smooth Clearasil (or ClearaShellTM if you will). Spin off the top, puncture the foil lid, apply, and watch the pus drain from those unsightly pimples. “Take it away!” we as a nation should yell in unison, “squirt that greasy pus out of our sore shores immediately!” And thankfully they do just that – every last drop of it! Just observe:
But then of course there are those who don’t believe that the pus should be squeezed out like that – that perhaps it is harmful for our country’s complexion; that something could go wrong. And (like some loony physician waffling on about precautionary principles and other such PC-gone-mad rubbish) they believe that safer approaches should be found. WHAT NONSENSE!
These complainers are nothing more than a bunch of greedy bores, somehow thinking they have the right to express their free speech and criticize the questionable practices of a major conglomerate. As everyone knows, multi-national conglomerates MERELY follow the law – after all, how else could they be successful?
I could not – and would not – put it better myself. However, while we at Benthos Records may not always agree with (nor listen to) our artist’s political, social, cultural, economic and artistic viewpoints, we must listen to their music sometimes. And sometimes this involves attending one of their shows.
