This mix contains music by the Irish electronic music community.
About 4 weeks ago I put out a call online for any and all productions by Irish producers. Having been involved in this scene for a good number of years now, I thought I knew everyone making decent beats in Ireland, some personally, some only by name, some from working with them at gigs and some from just talking to online.
I now know that this is complete and utter bullshit. I know no one. The extent to which digital audio workstations like Ableton Live, Logic, FL Studio etc. has democratised music production seems to have no bounds. Platforms like Soundcloud and (even) Facebook have created healthy support and distribution communities. An encouraging thought.
I received 100s of submissions which I combined with stuff I’ve been archiving myself. Having stuck with a dubstep-centered theme last year I decided to go with something different this year and owing to the strengths of the tracks I had in my hands I went with a glitchy hiphop theme spanning a range of BPMs. I then used some more 4×4 based tracks, which I felt were strong, to bridge the tempos. Overall the standard of production is amazingly high and it’s great to see people going to the trouble of having tracks squared off and mastered properly, not least because it made my job that much easier.
There were lots of other tracks I wanted to fit in here as well, but they just weren’t working in the mix and, conscious of the overall effect being less than the sum of their parts, I dropped them. But I’ll just give a quick mention to some of them now. Laura Kilty&DJ Somatix, Replete, Mister Eko, Ian Dunne, Sherbert Mastadon, Komplex Therapy & Romeo Butcher, Acre, Jimmy Penguin, Latent Saint, Brian O Diolun, The Handless Organist… I could go on, but anyway, lots of amazing stuff that I recommend people get busy and check out.
