Are you familiar with the film Psycho?
You’ve heard Bernard Herrmann’s score then, and died a death of a thousand cuts in sympathy with Janet Leigh, to the tune of his stabbing violins?
Read on…
A note came in from Enda Bates, who was rocking out with The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock the last time I saw him on stage. However, it turns out he’s also a composer, in the modern classical sense.
I’ll hand over to Enda to tell us more.
Strings, Tension & Flight, a collection of two electroacostic works by Enda Bates will be released as a digital download on the 25th of April, 2012. The release will be launched following a performance of one of these works, Duo & Tape, at the Contemporary Music Centre Salon of Kaleidoscope Premieres with Kate Ellis (cello) and Cliodhna Ryan (violin). Full details of this event can be found in the press release below.

Composer Note
Both of these works are preoccupied with tension, that nervous energy which quickens the pulse and primes us for action. The first piece, Duo & Tape, was inspired by the propelling rhythms and unsettling harmonies of Bernard Hermann’s score for Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film Psycho. In the electronic piece Flock, an algorithm which models the restless motion of birds is used to control both the motion and resynthesis of various string and noise samples. The version presented here is a stereo remix of the original version for eight loudspeakers. I am deeply grateful to the Arts Council and especially to Kate and Cliodhna for commissioning this new work and their continuing support.

The pieces will also be available to hear on Enda’s bandcamp from Wednesday.
He had me at Bernard Herrmann. But eight loudspeakers? Great…
