Yawning Chasm have produced a video for the spine-tingling eponymous track off their Whispered Sun EP, released in March. Directed by friend to the band Jimmy Monaghan and shot by Jason Kane, the premise is simple. The results, enthralling. The video sees Aaron Coyne and Declan Kelly play the song through a pane of glass filled with water (I’m guessing a fish tank?), while the pair’s features remain unclear throughout. As the song progresses, red and green liquids and particles of glitter are filtered into the water at choice musical moments until the view is entirely clouded over in a swirling, twinkling fusion of colour.
For me, the blurred image employed in the video propagates the idea that duo are sometimes overlooked. I’m all for an aesthetic which employs mystique, but here’s hoping Yawning Chasm’s musical vision comes into focus on a larger scale sooner rather than later. They truly are one of the most talented and promising acts currently operating in Ireland, albeit just beneath the radar.
