Ahead of his appearance at the NOISE Weekender at the end of the month, Marc O’Reilly gives us a tasty TOp 5, which is not short of a twist or two…
1. Pearl Jam – Rear View Mirror
Just love this band. Have seen them 3 times live and they are just fecking awesome. I still dream of becoming Mike McCready some day! It still fascinates me how a group of people can stay together so long and still play and write great music.
2. Joni Mitchell – River
First time I listened to Blue I think I just had this song on repeat. The “Jingle Bells” reference, the lyrics, melody and vocals are superb. For me in terms of song writing, it has it all.
3. Chemical Brothers – Surface to Air
Such a good song. Takes its time to build and build. Every time I hear it, it just immediately puts me in good form. Brilliant.
4. Fleetwood Mac – Albatross
One of my favourite guitar-based tunes. I think it’s a great example of “less is more”. The melody and tone of the guitars is just, well its just SAVAGE! Peter Green-legend!
5. Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy Jnr
He tells this very disturbing and sad story in just over 3 mins with beautiful music and vocals. It’s such a difficult thing to try and achieve but he makes it seem so easy. Just brilliant song writing.
